The criteria for quality are usually determined by power, or to put it even more crudely, by money. For the sake of argument, let’s say that the so-called West holds most of the power and thus the right to establish criteria of quality and the right to decide what is contemporary. This geography of power takes a strong toll on artists from the East. What are the strategies of resistance? Can they ignore this division? Must they return to their folkloric roots in order to satisfy expectations and succumb to a certain set of criteria? What are the viewpoints of programmers programming Eastern works in the West, Western works in the East?
